Drag is a performance art. It involves the impersonation of a thing by the opposite of that thing, for the purposes of playing with symbols and images for entertainment. Drag is a send up, and at once, an homage. It deconstructs while at once mocking, honoring and entertaining.
Wolf Blitzer. Howie Kurtz (usually). Brit Hume and anyone on Fox. David Broder. Any cable talking head, except Olbermann. Any network news anchor. These people are in drag, but unlike the true drag artist, whose performance is presented openly as a facade, these people either hide the fact that they do no real reporting from themselves or merely hide it from their audiences. They are lousy drag artists. In fact, they are not drag arists, but bullshit artists, aka, frauds. And there's nothing worse than bad drag!
The funny thing is, the best journalists we have on television today are the ones who most knowingly wink at their audiences in the way a canny drag artsist does. I refer, of course, to Olbermann and to Jon Stewart. Would that we had more.
